The Forest Digital Twin Component — Forest DTC project achieved a major milestone on Thursday, 28th October, by publicly introducing the first live prototype demonstration of the system with project stakeholders and possible future end-users, with about 60 participants from all over Europe.
The project is developed as part of the ESA Digital Twin Earth Programme, contributing to Destination Earth (DestinE) – a flagship initiative of the European Commission to build a highly accurate digital twin of the Earth.
The project is led by VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, with Terramonitor being the main subcontractor and responsible for the technical development of the Forest DTC system’s technical integration and implementation.
The project’s European-wide consortium also includes partners from Czechia (CzechGlobe), Germany (GFZ), Portugal (Yucatrote), and Spain (CTFC).
In the prototype demonstration day, the first version and functions of the Forest DTC platform were introduced successfully. The participants also gave highly encouraging feedback on the system and its planned capabilities through anonymous polls, which ensured the efforts and implementation of the system are on the right track.

The two-year project is now in its mid-term phase. The following year will be used for further improvements for technical scalability and performance, and finally making the first live version of the digital twin system with global coverage.
